Well, it is not that I have forgotten to file a report concerning the fishing conditions on the Klamath River between Irongate Dam and the Klamathon Bridge, it is that I have not been near a computer. I have been busy fishing Salmon on the Klamath and the last time I checked my drift boat does not have any power ports to plug the lap top into. Fishing has been very good. Things slowed down a little between October 8 and the 15th but picked up again with a new batch of salmon on the afternoon of the 15th. Big fish in good shape was the norm. We were consistently boating fishing in the twenty pound range and fish counts around 15 plus hooked were common. Today, October 22 sees things slow some for salmon, we hooked 6 fish and had 2 in the boat. On the positive side the Steelhead count is picking up. We landed a beautiful 5 pound Steelhead that we quickly released. Most of the guides are now targeting Steelhead and seem to be doing very well with reports of several fish in the 5-7 pound range. We should have about another week of Salmon/Steelhead action on this section of river and then it will be Steelhead only, and that is not a bad thing . I have been fishing Salmon on this section of river for about 40 days now and very often stop at the Fish Hook restaurant for lunch and their Prime Rib dinner on Friday and Saturday nights. The food is always good and we never tire of the variety. It is always worth the stop on your way down the river. I will update next week and let you know how the Steelhead fishing is developing. I have been salmon fishing in this area for the past eleven days and it just keeps getting better and better. The Salmon are really filling in now and we are getting some good fish counts. I have been running 8-10 fish a day and some guides are reporting a dozen plus fish hooked. The quality of fish for these waters remain high with most fish going in the 8 to 14 pound range. There have been several fish caught in the 20 pound range and that is Fun with a capital F. If the salmon continue to fill in, and that’s the report, this will be an outstanding season. If you are looking for Trout or Steelhead you will have to wait awhile, you could say that at this time Salmon are king. This afternoon we boated 3 nice hens in the great waters off of the Klamath Ranch Resort. We would have stayed and taken a few more but the heat won out and we headed down river to camp. Much better fishing weather is forecast for Tuesday and beyond, can’t wait. The day time high is predicted to drop by 30 degrees, we will have to see what that does for the fishing. Gary Horne

Trout fishing is slowing down but the Salmon bite is starting to improve. Patient anglers are being rewarded with a Salmon or two for a days work. The salmon that we have caught are in the 9 to 15 lb range and are in great shape. We are seeing several salmon in the system, in fact, this is the largest number of fish I have seen moving around this early in the season. If our Fish and Wild Life officers would get off the stick and enforce the net regulations at the mouth of the Klamath we could have a banner year. As far as the trout, we have picked up several large ones while we bounce roe for salmon in the deeper holes. Largest Rainbow so far is a 6 pounder that we released to possibly catch another day. To help take the edge off a long day on the river you would do well to pull your boat up on the bank at the Fish Hook Restaurant for a meal or a cold drink. It always make fishing the bottom half of this area much more enjoyable. My prediction, based on weather forecast, observations and my 20 years of fishing this area , the Salmon should really start turning on about the 24th of September.

Here is an update on the fishing front from Iron gate dam to the Klamathon Bridge. As always two things are happening this time of year: we are waiting for the salmon to show up and the trout fishing is very good. We have been catching 10 to 20 trout each day we are out. Not a bad time filler while we wait for, what is forecast to be, one of the best salmon seasons in many years. It is my understanding that the salmon limits this year are 2 King Salmon over 22 inches and 1 under 22 inches with a maximum of 6 fish in possession. Check the regulation before you start fishing; they can change at the last minute. The trout that we have been taking are mainly on night crawlers in the faster riffles. If fly fishing is your thing then try a small gold headed black nymph or my favorite a Montana buck tail. Get your trout fishing in now because once the Salmon show up catching trout becomes more difficult with hookups far and few between. As far as where to find the Rainbows, it is very good fishing in the waters off of the Klamath Ranch Resort. You can fish at the upstream end, down stream end or in the middle. We always find fish there. The Blue Heron RV park at the Klamath Ranch Resort is an excellent place to set up fish camp. Make your plans early because they do fill up during the Salmon season.
